Abstract:
Olive oil production represents a significant economic sector in southern European regions, including Spain, Italy, and Greece. These countries account for nearly 98% of the world's olive oil production, and Portugal for about 7%. However, this industry faces a growing challenge to manage the generated waste. Including solid residue (pomace) and olive cake and effluent (olive mill waste water), this waste contributes to environmental pollution. In Portugal, the disposal and treatment of pomace has been increasingly challenging, as production capacity grows. This work investigates the combination of different waste treatments, including sequential physical, chemical, and biochemical processing of olive pomace waste, to maximize its valorization potential. Some properties of the olive pomace throughout the various treatments were also studied to validate their efficiency. Each treatment resulted in materials possible to utilize for value-added products: the physical treatment originated a micronized residue that can be, e.g., incorporated in textile coating pastes as color agent; the chemical and biochemical treatments, bioactive extracts rich in phenolic content possible to use as antioxidant and antimicrobial agents in, e.g., textile functionalization. The combination of the three treatments lead to the highest valorization of the residue.
