Abstract:
Agriculture is regarded as a source of 30 % of global anthropogenic emissions. A novel technology, aligning with current regulations of covering slurry stores, has been developed for processing manure directly obtained from the stables of beef cattle, dairy cows, and fattening pigs. For this investigation, the novel prototype was initially charged with raw cattle slurry and samples of 1.5 kg were taken during the next 5 days of operation, to assess the stabilization process in terms of maturity of the organic manure (i.e., moisture content, Rotte Grade, phytotoxicity, inorganic carbon content) and availability of the nutrients (i.e., nitrogen and phosphorus). Because the content of water-soluble phosphate is often the bottleneck that limits the land application of animal manures, the processing of the beef slurry with the novel prototype increased the rate of land application of the soil organic amendment by decreasing 96.651 ± 0.003 % the availability of phosphorus in the form of orthophosphate, regarding the 1.591 ± 0.091 g PO43--P/L compost at the first day of stabilization. The germination index was not affected throughout the 5-day incubation of the cattle manure in the novel prototype and this parameter was maintained at a level of 129.507 ± 18.405.
