Abstract:
Contrasting with Mexico´s wealth of energy resources, 36.7% of households on a national level live in energy poverty, with highest levels in the southern states. We work together with six initiatives of social and solidarity economy (ESS) in the southern state of Tabasco to define energy needs and implement actions that reduce the impact of energy poverty on their social and economic performance. Actions focus on increasing energy efficiency, and on production and distribution of energy from local resources. We implement alternatives on a pilot level, which so far have included training in civil participation, the installation and use of ecotechnologies such as photovoltaic devices, efficient cooking stoves, solar driers and biomass residues for solid biofuels production, and the improvement of electricity networks, according to the identified energy needs in each initiative. We instrument a process of exchange of experiences among the different initiatives and with other interested actors. We conclude that working on energy democratization, from local participation around the specific problematics of ESS initiatives has a high potential, as it allows a continuous reflection on the implemented actions and motivates other actors to engage in energy democratization.
