Abstract:
This study explores the organic waste-to-energy potential through biomethane generation in India and countries in Europe to evaluate the fraction of each country’s energy generation that biogas from wastes can produce. We initially summarise findings from our previous work on India’s waste-to-biomethane potential and the corresponding greenhouse gas removal capabilities, based on the average grid carbon intensity and extend these to understand sectoral contributions. It was found that 47% of India’s electricity or 91% transportation energy demand could be supplied by biomethane generated from wastes produced in the agriculture, horticulture, animal husbandry municipalities, fish processing, sericulture, and agro-industrial sectors. Only 43% of India’s biomethane potential would be needed to supply for all of India’s cooking fuel demands. The corresponding greenhouse gas savings are promising. Furthermore, more than 95% of this biomethane comes from agriculture, horticulture, animal husbandry, and municipal solid wastes. So, this analysis was extended to countries in Europe based on the wastes produced from only these sectors in the year 2018. The fraction of gross electricity generation that biomethane can produce ranges from 1% to 87% across the countries in Europe. Since the average grid carbon intensities in these countries differ, the relative advantages of using biomethane for electricity generation will also vary.
