Abstract:

RESIST project aims at making regions more resilient to Climate Change. It will adopt a new practical framework in which climate adaptation pathways will be tested in four EU regions with different socioeconomic profiles, Southwest Finland, Central Denmark, Catalonia, and Central Portugal, through the implementation of four Large-Scale Demonstrators (LSD). RESIST’s regions will test adaptation solutions to the following key climate challenges: floods, droughts, heatwaves, wildfires, and soil erosion. Know-how and adaptation pathways will be transferred from the four demonstrator regions to eight twinned Eu’s regions, through mutual-learning activities and immersive digital twins. The Portuguese LSD will be implemented in Coimbra and Medio Tejo municipalities. For the Medio Tejo region, where this work will be focused, novel solutions for promoting better land use, forest management and bio-circularity of green bio-waste to reduce wildfire risks will be the main goals. This will be achieved by assessing the potential of local biomass wastes conversion into renewable gases (e.g., syngas, hydrogen) through thermal gasification, which will lead to the definition of business models based on pilot results. These models will enhance knowledge transfer that will enable and expand the models to other regions envisaged in the project, and hopefully throughout Europe.
