Abstract:

Germany has set an ambitious target of achieving net-zero emissions by 2045 to contribute to the Paris Agreement goals of limiting global temperature rise. BECCS is considered a keystone technology for providing negative emissions and enhancing energy system .exibility in the presence of a high share of renewables; however, its large-scale implementation faces multi-dimensional challenges related to technical, .nancial, environmental, infrastructure, land use competition, policy/regulatory, and public acceptance issues. On the other hand, forest-based NETs like a.orestation and forest management o.er natural carbon sinks and ecosystem services bene.t. But their potential is limited and they face obstacles like land competition, .re risks, regulatory hurdles, climate vulnerability, and time lags. This research integrates BECCS and forest-based solutions into an optimization model (BENOPTex) to assess their deployment for achieving climate targets cost-e.ectively across Germany’s power, heat, transport, and chemical sectors. Key aspects analyzed include feasibility, cost-e.ectiveness, GHG removal potential and removal options, but did not consider side-e.ects and possible trade-o.s (i.e. with biodiversity loss). Preliminary .ndings show that combined BECCS and forest-based options cannot meet Germany’s targets; hence, additional NETs are needed. BECCS could provide around 60 Mt CO2 removal by 2050, while forest-based options estimated to eliminate 39 Mt CO2. Combining BECCS with forest management can also signi.cantly lower the system’s removal cost from €177/t CO2 with solely BECCS to €100/t CO2.
