Abstract:
Industrial wastes can be feasible for synthesizing biochar or activated carbon, and these can be used as adsorbents for dye removal from aqueous solutions. KOH was employed to activate the biochar derived from pine (Pinus radiata) sawdust. The adsorbents were thoroughly characterized. The study of the adsorption of three acid wood dyes was carried out in batch and continuous mode. Batch studies were performed to analyze the influence of contact time, initial dye concentration, initial pH, and adsorbent dose. Regarding the fixed-bed experiments, the breakthrough curves were determined by varying the flow rate, bed height, and initial dye concentration, and the Yoon-Nelson and Thomas models best fitted the experimental data. Regeneration experiments were conducted using hydrogen peroxide. This study showed that activated carbon from pine sawdust has a high adsorption potential to remove anionic dyes.
