Abstract:

In this work we have had the opportunity to study two different microalgae Chlorella species produced at CEA Cadarache under different conditions so that we had different initial biochemical compositions for Chlorella vulgaris and Chlorella sorokiniana. An experimental kinetic study was performed in a batch reactor between 200 and 350 °C and with different reaction times between 0 and 30 min for several microalgae samples. The biocrude oils and organics in the aqueous phase were analysed and quantified, including the identification of the dominating chemical families and structures. Based on these identifications a simplified chemical mechanism is proposed for the conversion of microalgae biomass. The kinetic parameters were determined by a mathematical optimisation procedure on a sub-set of the experiments. The model predictions are compared with the full set of experimental data. Results in terms of accuracy are correct with a correlation coefficient value of 0.73. To improve the accuracy of the model and the details of the model, the next step of this development is to use more quantitative product data for the optimisation of the model to gain accuracy in the products profiles predictions.
