Abstract:

This work explores the effect of chemical functional groups on the dewatering ability of hydrochar, which is a carbonrich product obtained from hydrothermal carbonization of biomass. Molecular dynamics simulations were used to investigate the behavior of hydrochar molecules with different functional groups, including hydroxyl, carboxyl, and carbonyl groups, in water. The simulations revealed that hydrochar molecules with carboxyl and carbonyl groups exhibited stronger hydrogen bonding with water molecules and lower dewatering ability compared to those without functional groups. The study provides insights into the relationship between the O/C ratio of hydrochar and its dewatering ability, which can be useful for optimizing hydrochar production and processing.
