Abstract:
Thermochemical treatment of sewage sludge produced from industrial and municipal wastewater treatments is considered a promising process for valorizing this residue into energy and value-added materials. In recent years, there is an increasing interest in the processing of sewage sludge through either pyrolysis or hydrothermal carbonization for the production of biochar and hydrochar, respectively. Both materials have potential uses as soil amendment for agro-environmental purposes, as renewable fuels and adsorbents, among other applications. Very limited information is available on the differences between the physicochemical properties of both materials and their derived appropriate use. In this work a comparison of the thermochemical properties of biochar and hydrochar produced using different temperatures under lab scale conditions is made and suitable applications are proposed. The physicochemical properties of biochar and hydrochar were analyzed and compared. Mass and energy balances of the pyrolysis and hydrothermal process are established from experimental results.
