Abstract:
Small-scale (residential) pellet boilers and pellet stoves are the most popular appliances for biomass-based heating in Europe. This leading position in the renewable energy market has been made possible by the continuous further development of combustion technologies towards more user-friendliness and ease of use as well as higher efficiencies and lower emissions. Today’s state-of-the-art (SOA) pellet boilers and stoves are already characterised by emissions that are far below the limits of the EU Ecodesign regulations. However, some technology developers and manufacturers have already initiated the next development step towards emission-free pellet combustion as far as CO, OGC and particulate matter (PM) are concerned. Due to their negligible environmental impact these boilers and stoves are suitable to replace in future natural gas and oil fired heating system by CO2 neutral solutions. Moreover, when replacing old wood burning boilers and stoves by SOA technologies respectively the new zero-emission approaches significant emission savings regarding CO, OGC and dust can be achieved. Calculations performed under Austrian framework conditions indicate reduction potentials of 93% to 98% for CO, 97% to 98% for OGC and 81% to 97% for dust.
