Abstract:

An urban heat island (UHI) is an urban area that is significantly warmer than its surrounding rural areas due to human activities. The MateMad Project aims to select the most promising materials for the improvement of the ability and sustainability of urban areas will be selected for more detailed characterization. Virgin cork for Bioeconomy (BIOBOR project), is a project funded by the Spanish Ministry of Science and Innovation through the State Program for Research, Development and Innovation, oriented to the Challenges of Society, within the framework of the State Plan for Scientific and Technical Research and Innovation. The main objective of the BIOBOR project is to promote the production of virgin cork in young cork oak groves to prevent the abandonment of cork oak groves. In this sense, the project intends to develop tools to facilitate its production and consider environmental impacts throughout the process. For that, a multidisciplinary approach has been approached from three points of view: forest management, technological characterization of the virgin cork, and environmental evaluation. An assessment of the Environmental Life Cycle, and Carbon Footprint, of the management of the cork oaks from the plantation to the first transformation into cork granulate and its possible commercial is being carried out.
