Abstract:

The use of renewable energies can reduce dependence on fossil fuels, and among the various possible strategies for energy production is the use of biomass, such as agricultural, urban or food industry waste, which can feed a micro-cogenerator and through combustion of these substrates produce a range of outputs, such as electricity, thermal energy that can serve heating systems for greenhouses and CO2 that can be used for carbonic fertilisation in protected crops, as well as obtaining biochar as combustion takes place through pyrolysis and therefore without oxygen. This type of energy production perfectly matches the principles of circular economy as what is currently considered industrial waste can become a resource by being reused to feed modern agricultural systems as the product of biomass combustion, i.e. biochar, is also an important input as a fertiliser in agriculture with a number of positive effects on crop growth.
