Abstract:

The energy conversion of sludge appears as a very attractive alternative in a global context where there is a growing demand for renewable energy sources. The pyrolysis process in the production of pulverized sludge charcoal presents itself as an alternative for the substitution of fossil fuels. It is an ecologically attractive option that increases the energy content of conventional biomass sources. Primary sludge is generated in the Effluent Treatment Plants (ETP) of kraft pulp mills. Normally, this waste is sent to industrial landfills. In 2022, Brazilian pulp mills generated approximately 1 million tons of primary sludge. The present work aims to study the technical feasibility of transforming primary sludge, generated in the ETP of kraft pulp mills, into pulverized charcoal. The effect of pyrolysis temperature (290 and 320 ºC) and residence time (40 and 60 minutes) on the physical-chemical properties of the charcoals were evaluated. In the treatment of 320 °C in 60 minutes the best energy efficiency was obtained for pulverized sludge charcoal. It is concluded that the properties of pulverized sludge charcoal are suitable for internal energy generation in the kraft cellulosic pulp mill, improving the fuel quality for burning.
