Abstract:
The aviation industry is one of the long-distance transport sectors, besides shipping, rail and heavy-duty road transport, which are hard to electrify and therefore need an alternative approach for decarbonizing. Besides efficiency-enhancing measures, energy-dense liquid fuels, that can be used in the existing fleet of aircrafts (Sustainable Aviation Fuels – SAF) are being discussed as an important way to reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from the aviation sector. Several technology pathways to produce sustainable aviation fuels have already been approved by ASTM or are under development and demonstration, and first commercial plants for SAF production have been built in recent years and more are planned. Yet such fuels currently represent about 0.1% of global aviation fuel consumption. In order to understand why the market uptake of SAF is only progressing slowly, it is necessary to closely monitor the actual progress and to identify and understand the hindering factors.
