Abstract:
Developing the forest harvesting plan is a fundamental part of the forest planning activities which however is often not performed. Furthermore, there is the need of increasing the degree of objectivity in the selection of harvesting systems, particularly concerning extraction operation. This study properly aimed to identify in an objective way the selection criteria for the three main currently applied extraction systems (forwarder, forest winch and cable yarder) applying the AHP methodology. A survey was sent to forest experts from all the world and through the application of the algorithms of AHP the criteria with the highest influence on the choice were identified. Regarding forwarder soil bearing capacity showed to be the most important criterion, for winch it was viability density (as well as extraction distance) and for cable yarder it was the extracted timber amount. Integrating these results into GIS allows to apply the output of AHP at territorial level, developing sustainable forest harvesting plans.
