Abstract:

The primary and secondary sludge contitute the major solid wastes of pulp and paper mills. To avoid its disposal in landfills, it has been evaluated better management options. The production of pellets from sludge may be a viable alternative because the pelletizing process densifies the residues producing a material with higher energetic density and better handling conditions. The objective of this work was to use a mixture of primary and secondary sludge from the effluent treatment plant of a kraft pulp mill for the production of pellets for energy purposes. The pellets were made from a mixture of 50% primary sludge and 50% secondary sludge with two different moisture content 10% ± 5 and 55% ± 5. The sludge mixture resulted in a high heating value (HHV) of 16.79 MJ.kg-1, similar to other agro-industrial wastes. The biofuel showed uniformity and good visual characteristics. The pellets production using sludge from the pulp mill proved to be technically feasible. A significant reduction in the disposal of landfills would be accomplished. Furthermore, the production of modern biomass using residues comprises the concept of circular economy, promoting an innovative character to the mill by using renewable energy from waste.
