Abstract:

Climate action is urgent, and the swift deployment of bioenergy solutions is a vital piece to the transition from a fossil to a bio-based economy. The aviation sector presents an important challenge, and Brazil could play an important role in this transition, by cultivating biomasses such as sugarcane and eucalyptus, and further conversion into sustainable aviation fuels (SAF) through biochemical (alcohol-to-jet - ATJ) and thermochemical (gasification - GFT) routes. This work aims to adaptconversion routes eucalyptus (wood and residues) and sugarcane (sugar and fiber) into a flexible and integrated framework for sustainability assessment, responding to input changes on biomass type and availability, culture practices, and transportation distances. Preliminary results show that both ATJ (1G) and GFT (direct) routes for sugarcane provide a mitigation margin of at least 67%, in substitution of fossil kerosene, for the studied expansion area. And while, some process hotspots could be addressed, such as enzyme supply, emissions from biomass cultivation are key, and aiming for areas with higher yield can have a significant contribution and should be prioritized. Nonetheless, further progress will still be made regarding routes flexibilization and inclusion of eucalyptus, that will culminate in a thorough study for SAF expansion in Brazil.
