Abstract:
This study aimed to evaluate the effects on H2 and CH4 yields of a thermo-alkaline pre-treatment of giant reed biomass, followed by enzymatic saccharification, in a two-stage anaerobic system. Giant reed biomass was pre-treated with diluted alkali (KOH 1.5% w/w, 121 °C, 20 min). The pre-treated biomass was enzymatically hydrolyzed. After the saccharification, the hydrolyzed biomass was used in dark fermentation. Finally, the fermentation broth derived from dark fermentation was used as feedstock for anaerobic digestion. The initial pH of dark fermentation and anaerobic digestion was adjusted at 8.7 and 7, respectively. Biogas production was evaluated in laboratory static mesophilic batch conditions (500-mL reactors, 12 g volatile solids, 200 mL reaction volume). The two-stage anaerobic system permitted the production of 215 mL H2 g-1 volatile solids, in comparison with a negligible amount of H2 obtained from untreated control reactors. Using the fermentation broth as feedstock for anaerobic digestion, the CH4 yield increased by 76% in comparison with untreated control reactors (313 vs. 178 mL CH4 g-1 volatile solids).
