Abstract:

Restrictions on the disposal of sewage sludge in soils have increased the use of thermal treatments to process these residues. Recent regulatory requirements to recover available phosphorus in sewage sludge require the application of separate thermochemical processes for this material. The integration of thermochemical processing in municipal solid waste incineration (MSWI) plants offers economic and environmental advantages. In this work, the analysis of the thermochemical processing of sewage sludge, including the stages of drying, pyrolysis and incineration, is carried out by means of mass and energy balances for its integrated operation in an MSWI plant. The mass and energy balances of the pyrolysis process are established from experimental results in a laboratory fixed bed standard retort (ISO647). Characterization of sewage sludge and pyrolysis products is performed according to standard procedures. As a result, a conceptual design of the integrated process is presented.
