Abstract:

The activity was aimed to evaluate and compare the physical and energy characteristics of the pellets obtained from different type of raw materials: dedicated plantations, pruning residues, thinning of artificial forest plants and urban green areas. The bulk density exceeded 600 kg m-3 for 45% of the biomasses tested. The length and the diameter of the cylinders ranged from 9.16 mm and 18.36 mm and from 6.10 mm and 6.33 mm, respectively. The calorific value varied from 14.43 MJ Kg-1 and 18.27 MJ Kg-1 while the ash content values were found lower than 1% only for radiata pine, stone pin e and urban green eucalyptus. Finally, all the pellets examined showed an ash melting point above 1,400° C. The biomass obtained from medium-cycle cultivations (MRF) and forest residues were the best sources of material to be used for pellet production. Some of the most penalizing parameters can be improved by mixing the biomass under study in different proportions.
