Abstract:

BECCS (bioenergy with carbon capture and storage) is an indispensable technology to achieve the international and Brazilian climatic goals, notably because it provides negative emissions. In addition, Brazil presents favorable conditions for the development of BECCS, notably because of the country’s biofuels industries. Therefore, this research aims at providing a systematic literature review about the effective potential of implementing BECCS in Brazil. The platforms chosen for this study are broadly used by Brazilian researchers, including universities online libraries, which allow to expand the search to doctor’s thesis and master’s dissertations. The search initially identified 438 studies, of which 17 were analyzed after selection and screening. Of these, 15 argued that there is a potential of implementing BECCS in Brazil, mostly based on its importance to achieve the targets set at the Paris Agreement, and on the technical and economic viability of this technology in the country. In addition, the results highlight the potential of developing BECCS in the southeast region of Brazil. However, due to limitations in CO2 transportation, the costs of implementing BECCS increase significantly as the CO2 capture is expanded away from the southeast region, meaning a bottleneck to the large-scale implementation of BECCS in Brazil.
