Abstract:

The biomass feedstock production from plantations designed for energy production is the option with the highest yielding. Focused on woody species used in short rotation coppice it should identify the aspects to improve and optimize the biomass yields in marginal land under Mediterranean conditions, where the water is scarce, the ability to obtain good yields with low volumes of water should be studied. The objective of this work was to assess three irrigation doses in two different poplar clones in a marginal area of North-Central Spain in a three-year cut turn plantation during four harvest. Both poplar clones achieved similar results comparing yields for all irrigation doses. Assessing the yields for different irrigation doses were obtained similar results for irrigation doses of 6322 m3·ha-1·y-1 to 3552 m3·ha-1·y-1 along the years of the study. The plantation yields were lower when the plantation is getting older. This work can be a step ahead for the demonstration that perennial woody crops can be an alternative in marginal lands. Life cycle assessment, and economic assessment and environmental concerns in the use of water in Mediterranean climates should be listed.
