Abstract:

Lack of access to clean fuels or technologies is an important problem that concerns approximately one third of the world population. Especially, in developing parts of the world including Africa, China, India and South America, people still rely on solid fuel burning in traditional or charcoal stoves which has many drawbacks on social life, health and environment. Within our LabTogo project, one of our aims is to develop a low-cost and fuel-flexible biomass burner called “Apeli” stove. In this study, we studied the environmental impacts of substituting status quo fuels/technologies like wood and charcoal with Apeli stove fueled with locally available fuels. Assuming that replacing wood and charcoal fuels at varying ratios of 5-10-25 %, the amount of wood that can be saved and CO2 was calculated to understand the environmental impacts of using an alternative biomass burner fueled with locally-available fuels.
