Abstract:

The EU countries are increasing the consumption of renewable energy sources by 2030 and phase out the dependency on imported fossil fuels such as natural gas and oil products. Finland has also similar plans and for Finland the solid biomass fuels seems to be the most cost-effective solution in the short run. This paper provides information about the effects of increased biomass supply effects for the region of South-East Finland. Demand of biomass fuels is rising rapidly in the capital area Finland as well as other major cities near South-East Finland. Supply and utilization of domestic and regional wood biomass generate local employment and income, so it is feasible to supply large heat and power plants from the region. Total demand of forest biomass will increase significantly in the Southern Finland and part of the demand must be harvested and haulaged from the region of South-East Finland. According to the study, availability of forest biomass is sufficient in the region to meet part of the increasing demand in the surrounding regions. It is important to promote and discuss about the possibilities of forest biomass in regional level and to highlight the positive effects on regional economy and employment compared to imported fossil fuels.
