Abstract:
The dairy production industry is a significant sector of the local economy in Lesvos island. Among the different cheese whey waste effluents, the focus is on the cheese whey wastewater (CWW), which consists of washing (rinsing) water and various fractions of primary and secondary whey. This study aims to address the degradability of cheese whey wastewater by means of acidic pretreatment and proposes an enhanced hydrothermal treatment strategy for valorization of the waste. Samples of cheese whey wastewater and sludge were treated in a hydrothermal autoclave at 200 °C. Overall, the acid pretreatment and the addition of sludge both were contributing factors for increased final liquid yields. The COD was measured by means of a HACH DR / 2400 spectrophotometer and the results were very interesting since the presence of acid seems to increase the COD of the (solely) CWW samples but has an opposite effect for the cases of CWW and sludge mixtures. Also, the addition of sludge increased the total phenolic content in the liquid fractions. The pH analysis showed that there is a mitigating effect of the acid pretreatment from the presence of sludge. Acid samples seem to be significantly less conductive.
