Abstract:
The production of pig manure in farms represents at least 5.7% of the total weight of these animals. These residues produce pollution, contamination of water, and generate conflicts with the communities that leave nearby. This work intends to evaluate the composition of pig manure from four different farms located in Colombia and study the biogas production at a laboratory scale and compare this production with the real potential of fermenters located in each one of the pig farms. The compositional analysis was performed using NREL protocols, then the Biological Methane Potential (BMP) using the standard VDI4630, and the Theoretical Biological Methane Potential were determined. After that, biogas production was evaluated in farms in Valle del Cauca, Antioquia, Tolima, and Cundinamarca. Possible improvement opportunities were identified in farms where an economic benefit due to biogas productions could be generated.
