Abstract:
There is little information about charcoal production activities in Portugal, which is an added difficulty for the development and optimization of current production processes. Therefore, the main objective of this work is to describe the typical manufacturing process associated with the carbonization of cork and holm oak woods. The information presented here includes the methods involved in all stages of the process, kiln technologies, machinery and ancillary facilities, as well as the main biomass-derived products, sub-products and markets. The results show that charcoal production activities in Portugal can be of considerable processing capacity, although the methods employed are rudimentary and empirical as compared to other branches of the biomass sector (e.g. pellets production). Although the kilns and the manufacturing practices have shown a positive development over the last few decades, this is still insufficient to keep up with society’s growing concerns with e.g., environmental protection and safety at work, increased competition from new producers using more efficient and cleaner production methods, and new policies framed in circularity and carbon neutrality models.
