Abstract:
One of the possible sources of wood biomass production is represented by the SRC poplar plantations. In the present work, poplar plantations characterized by 4 different cutting shifts (2, 3, 4, 5 years) were considered and for each of them the Global Warming Potential (GWP) was evaluated according to the IPCC method. With regard to the rotation cycle, 4 biomass harvesting system, with different levels of mechanization, were examined. It was considered that the biomass produced by the plantations was used ina biomass plant for heating a public building. The environmental impact related to the production of 1 GJ of thermal energy produced by each of the 4 SRC plants was calculated considering the entire life cycle, from the field stage to the thermal energy production.
