Abstract:

Herein we performed a preliminary profitability analysis of orange peel waste valorization to biomethane. This waste-to-energy alternative is a promising strategy to increase the presence of renewable energy sources. The profitability analysis was carried out using real data of orange peel production in Spain. To this end, the international recognized discounted cash flow method was used, focusing on net present value as main indicator. Approximately 450,000 tons per year of this waste are produced in southern Spain. In this study we evaluate the economic performance of biomethane production depending on the waste amount, from 25% to 100% of orange peel using sewage sludge as cosubstrate. Results indicated that incentives are needed to make the project profitable. Without these incentives, net present values ranged from -32 M€ to -18 M€ considering the current natural gas prices. Incentives as feed-in tariffs from 15 to 35 €/MWh would revert this outcome.
