Abstract:

Biomass gasification is a promising technology for generating electricity, heat, chemicals, and liquid fuels, with the potential to eliminate the use of fossil fuels. The performance of a 75 KWth downdraft reactor using air as a gasification agent was assessed in this experiment. The gasifier was run on eucalyptus wood of size 42.5x33.3x21.3, and the moisture content was between 10.5 and 20%. The equivalence ratio and moisture content of biomass were varied in the experiments. The result depicts as the equivalence ratio increases from 2.1 to 2.3, the yield of carbon monoxide increases, whereas the hydrogen gas decreases. Whereas on increasing the moisture on eucalyptus wood, the percentage of hydrogen increases and carbon monoxide yield reduced. The calorific value of the producer gas is reduced from 3.5 to 3 due to the high moisture present in the biomass.
