Abstract:

Water-extracted Tannins from sweet chestnut (Castanea sativa Mill) – CHT – are polyphenolic secondary metabolites found in vascular plants, in the stems, roots, seeds and leaves. CHT extract has been recognized as a plant biostimulant for the capacity to enhance plant rooting and to improve macro and micro elements uptake (starter effect). Plant biostimulants derived from natural materials have been receiving a growing interest by researchers, farmers, and industrial companies, being considered an effective tool to improve sustainably crop productivity. In the present study, we tested the efficacy of tannins in an open field ’Tarocco’ orange (Citrus sinensis (L.) Osbeck) orchard managed in a randomized block design with 4 irrigation strategies: Sustained irrigation; Sustained subsurface deficit irrigation; Regulated deficit irrigation; Partial root-zone drying. Preliminary results showed that a moderate water restriction can be applied in commercial orange orchards, because it saved water and improved fruit quality, by increasing total soluble solids and titratable acidity, while the ripening time was delayed. In this context, CHT application increased significantly orange yield, thus increasing WUE. CHT seems to be one of the available tools to enhance agricultural systems resilience, in accordance with circular economy principles, to achieve environmentally friendly food systems.
