Abstract:

Finland has a substantial amount of biomass reserves in young forests, however, poor profitability of harvesting small trees has limited the wood procurement and forest management activities in young forests. Finland’s Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry provides Kemira subsidy to manage young forests and produce woodchips from small-diameter trees, without the support it is not economically viable due to lack of productive harvesting methods and technology. The project “PUUSTI” aims to improve the profitability of young forest management and promote regional sustainability of wood supply in South Savo. An open network model for South Savo’s young forests is developed based on cost-effective harvesting methods and machines. Productivity and silvicultural impact of new harvesting method “boom-corridor harvesting” is investigated through LiDAR, orthoimages and field data. Networking workshops for harvesting and haulage entrepreneurs are carried out to implement new cost-productive harvesting method and integrate young forest regeneration sites as part of networked supply chains in South Savo. Cost-productive methods bring added value to forest supply chain operators, promote sustainable forest management practices and strengthen regional economy through resource mobilization.
