Abstract:

The search for different energy resources and the increment of renewable energy share, as well as energy savings and rational energy use are the key points of sustainable energy planning in a low carbon future. Solar energy presents high potential for playing a leading role in this search for sustainable energy, especially with hybrid photovoltaic-thermal solar panels (PVT). However, if a solution based only on renewable energy is desired for providing energy demands of residential sector, another heating technology is required. Biomass is the most suitable technology for this requirement. Suitable combination of biomass with PVT can be an excellent solution for providing energy requirements of an isolated house or groups of houses. In this framework, the research project “TEGBIOSOL – Integration of thermoelectric generators (TEG) in solar PVT collectors and biomass boilers: testing and optimization in polygeneration schemes” is being developed. The project aims at going a step forward in the development of both technologies by including thermoelectric modules (TEG) that are based on Seebeck effect and produce electricity from a temperature difference. The aim of this paper is to present the research that is being developed in one of the tasks of the project: optimal integration of TEG modules in a domestic biomass boiler.
