Abstract:
The sustainable management of coppice forests and enhancement of crop residues are a resource to be exploited for the development of the wood for energy supply chain. This study focuses on the physical and energetic characterization of oak residues (branches and tops), obtained from a coppice in central Italy. The evaluation indicate how the work system adopted by the company allows to maximize the recovery of wood material, of which the 19.8% is represented by branches and tops. On the other hand, the standardization of wood chips for energy uses set a series of properties that led to fall the material produced in the quality class B1. Summarizing, the results obtained in this work indicate as branches and tops can provide a product for energy production with medium commercial features, providing also information on energy efficiency and possible destinations.
