Biomass Residues from Sustainable Forest Management in Brazil

Abstract:

Brazil has the second largest forest area, behind Russia, with almost 500 million hectares of forests. Almost 10 million hectares are mostly occupied by planted forests, with eucalyptus and pine species. The main uses of these planted forests are: cellulose and paper, charcoal, firewood, energy, solid wood products and wood panels and laminate floors. Forest biomass appears as a source of firewood and charcoal in the energy matrix, responsible for 8.4% of Internal Energy Offer (IEO) in 2018. It also appears in the use as black liquor, in the use for energy cogeneration in the pulp and paper industries and as other renewable sources with the participation of 6.9%. Forest biomass appears as fuel for 106 thermoelectric power plants in operation in Brazil, with an installed power of 3.3 GW, which corresponds to 1.18% of the total thermoelectric installed power in the country. This paper analyses the potential for energy use from forest biomass in Brazil and, according to data from the National Electric Energy Agency, the participation of this biomass is still very low. On another hand, energy production from forest biomass in Brazil could be used in a better way, since there are forest residues in several segments, such as charcoal, wood panels and even the forestry residues usually left the field or that can be produced from dedicated plantations taking advantage of degraded areas in the country.
