Abstract:

Nowadays, biomass is used for less than 0.1% to produce biodiesel because of the higher process complexity and costs with respect to fossil fuel feedstock. There is a need for innovative and breakthrough technologies which makes the use of biomass for producing biodiesel competitive. CONVERGE project aims to validate an innovative process for advanced biodiesel production that is more efficient and less expensive than current technologies, making it competitive with fossil fuels. The present paper defines the criteria to set up case scenarios of low-carbon, resource-efficient and sustainable residual biomass supply chains suitable for the commercial application of CONVERGE technology in Scandinavian, Central European, Mediterranean and Hanseatic regions. Scandinavia and Central Europe have regions with the highest bioeconomic potentials which allow mono-feedstock supply chains and high capacity of the CONVERGE technology. The Mediterranean and Hanseatic regions have usually lower bioeconomic potential and only locally there are optimal conditions of supply. In these districts the most promising scenarios should rely more on not feedstock-specific production plants, on feedstock imports, or switching feedstock use from heat/power to biofuel applications. Moreover in these districts multi-feedstocks supply chains consisting in the integration of different kinds of biomass are strongly recommended.
