Abstract:

In Brazil, municipal lignocellulosic solid waste has been an issue leading to landfills overload and closely related to environmental problems. One of the pathways for municipal solid waste (MSW) management is the thermochemical processes aiming to convert the solid waste into heat for certain industrial sectors, together with solid fuel for the gasification process. The objective of this work is to perform an energy assessment of the fuel potential contained within the municipal wood waste of Brazil’s capital, Brasília. The aiming is to obtain the quality and viability of the proposed biofuel. For that, six species that have the largest representativity within the urban forest ecosystem of Brasília were collected. The biomasses were grounded and mixed to obtain a unique blend. Each species separately, as well as the blend, was subjected to torrefaction treatments, in conjunction with chemical experiments (proximate and calorific analysis) to enable biofuel characterization. Obtained results can be applied to the municipal solid waste management decisions as well as into proposals of afforestation actions with tree species containing a more energetic wood waste in future sectors of the expanding city (smart city concept).
