Abstract:

Cistus ladanifer L. is a bush species which usually covers great areas of burnt degraded forests, abandoned pastures and crops in Spain, Portugal, south of France and north of Morocco. Different products can be obtained and the essential oil has an increasing potential use. The methods of collecting the plant are manual and the production costs are high. The mechanized collection has not been developed due to the difficulties presented by both the resinous (sticky) nature of the plant, and the orographic difficulties of a great part of the land where it grows. The objective of this work is to obtain essential oil from mechanically collected C. ladanifer biomass and characterize its chemical composition. Likewise, rockrose biomass is also characterized as biofuel. Harvesting with a commercial cutting and baling system and its subsequent steam distillation have been possible. The obtained essential oil yield was close but lower than that reported for young twigs. Within the chemical composition of the essential oil obtained, a-pinene and viridiflorol can be highlighted. Concerning the use of the biomass as biofuel, its high ash content must be taken into account if ISO 17225-4:2014 is considered as reference.
