Abstract:
Due to global needs, fossil fuels are being replaced with renewable resources of energy and research studies are focusing more and more on heat-treated biomass research. The present study contributes to this research by studying the enhancement of the higher heating value (HHV) of wheat straw through the energy exploitation of the torrefaction of biomass for heating, cooling and electricity generation. Particularly, the impact of time and temperature on the facing process is investigated. In addition, innovative kinetic models are applied to adapt the experimental data using the R0 severity factor that combines the effect of temperature and reaction time in a non-isothermal torrefaction process. Given that wheat straw is low cost and according to our results, wheat straw can become an alternative source of combustion energy and the torrefied wheat straw can be produced among various other bioenergy products within the the concept of circular economy.
