Abstract:

The Region of Western Macedonia in Greece is quickly entering a post-lignite era. In this setting, DETEPA, the Municipal district heating company of Amyntaio in W. Macedonia, is progressing with the construction of two biomass grate fired boilers with a total capacity of 30MWth that will provide heat to their district heating network once the local lignite electricity plant ceases its operation in spring 2020. This paper presents an analysis of a proposed supply chain model that could secure biomass feedstock coming from local agricultural residues for the new boilers for the years to come. The model was the result of a fruitful dialogue with local stakeholders relevant to the biomass supply chain that lasted over a year. The results show that hog fuel coming from vineyard and orchard prunings could be a cost competitive fuel option for DETEPA, and possibly other district heating plants in W. Macedonia, with an added value for local development. In this respect, the proposed supply chain could serve as a model not only in the region of W. Macedonia, but also to other EU regions that are entering their post-coal era.
