Abstract:

The effects of combined thermo-alkaline pre-treatment followed by co-digestion with pig slurry on CH4 yields from giant reed (Arundo donax L.) was investigated. Giant reed biomass was pre-treated with diluted KOH and was used as feedstock in laboratory tests of anaerobic digestion, in batch, static, mesophilic conditions both in mono or in co-digestion with pig slurry. In addition, the impact of possible inhibitors released by pre-treatment was also evaluated by comparing the CH4 production from washed and unwashed materials. Co-digestion with pig slurry allowed to double the CH4 production in comparison with monodigestion, without any change in reaction volume. As far as the effects of combined thermo-alkaline pre-treatment followed by co-digestion with pig slurry are concerned, CH4 production has almost tripled, on average, in comparison with untreated giant reed in monodigestion. No negative effects of inhibitors, as well as no interactions between pre-treatment liquid phase and pig slurry, were detected. The results indicate that thermo-alkaline pre-treatment can be coupled to co-digestion with pig slurry to obtain a massive increase in CH4 production from alternative biomasses.
