Abstract:
Africa has experienced a rapid increase in the demand for energy this century, coinciding with the robust economic growth seen on the continent. Biomass and fossil fuels are a major energy source in Africa’s current energy mix. Biomass in particular accounts for approximately half of Africa’s total primary energy supply. In IRENA’s Renewable Energy Roadmap (REmap) Case (1), modern bioenergy remains a main energy source in Africa through 2050. Recognising the importance of bioenergy in Africa, IRENA has conducted various studies within this sector based on the following three pillars: sustainable supply of bioenergy feedstock, cost-effective technology for bioenergy conversion, and successful strategies for bioenergy scale-up. This article highlights IRENA’s recent studies on bioenergy in Africa to support sustainable development.
