Abstract:

Growing quantities of ashes from combustion of residual forest biomass are produced worldwide, every year. Currently ~70% of biomass ashes are disposed of in landfills. Thus, it is crucial to consider environmental recycling options for the management of these wastes. Application to soil for pH correction and fertilization appears to be an advantageous strategy, with the potential to recycle large quantities of these materials. However, ash cannot be directly applied to soil. Processing or pre-treatment of ash is necessary to allow safe and adequate use. The aim of this study was to prepare different formulations of ash-based materials (mix with organic wastes and/or granulated forms) to be used as soil improvers. Different stabilization conditions were also tested, in order to evaluate their influence on the physical-chemical properties and elemental composition of the soil improvers. Both laboratory and field tests were performed to evaluate the efficacy of the soil improvers in the recovery of degraded mining soils and to assess the safety of their use. All soil improvers tested in pot and field experiments were suitable for the improvement of soils properties, particularly for the correction of soil acidity and for the recovery of soil functions needed to support plant growth.
