Abstract:

The German energy system is highly dependent on the use of fossil gas. It is considered to be a “green” fossil energy carrier whose importance is even expected to rise in times of high shares of volatile renewable electricity in the grid. However, to reduce the dependence on imported natural gas and further increase the share of renewables in the energy mix, numerous technologies aim to substitute natural gas with green, renewable gas. Those technologies are promising, yet mostly not economically feasible under the current market situation. To face this issue, the Chair of Energy Process Engineering at Friedrich-Alexander University Erlangen-Nuremberg (FAU) developed a simulation-based optimisation model to analyse and compare different (funding) strategies to integrate renewable gases into the German gas market until 2050. Main focus of the model lies on a detailed description of the different technological options as well as a realistic mapping of the gas market’s behaviour. In doing so, the possible effects of different funding scenarios and quantities on the future gas mix, CO2 emissions and gas prices could be evaluated.
