Abstract:

New limit values for energy production emissions entered into force at the start of the year 2018 in Finland. The new values are remarkably stricter for wood and peat than for black and brown coal. The Finnish Energy’s estimates have it that the emission reductions require investments totalling EUR 430 million in power plants whose operation is based on biomass and other solid biofuels. The fuel used affects the emissions generated in the combustion process. According to studies carried out at the South-Eastern Finland University of Applied Sciences (Xamk), emissions can be reduced by mixing peat with horse manure. The use of this mixed fuel does not require separate investments. The objective of Xamk’s NOxOpti project is to develop the management and monitoring of emissions from energy production plants that use biofuels. The aim is to improve the environmental safety and cleanness of medium sized energy production plants’ (1–50 MW) combustion processes. The project’s demonstrative tests will produce new data on the usability of biomaterials for the management of boiler plants’ flue gas emissions. The NOxOpti project’s results will promote environmental protection, the self-sufficiency of the South Savo region and the utilisation of biomaterials.
