Abstract:

The entrepreneurs in the horse sector in the South Savo region have had major problems with regard to the processing of horse manure. Large race and riding horse stables do not necessarily have fields where the horse manure could be spread as fertiliser. At present, the organisation of the manure management system is a large cost item for the entrepreneurs, and this, in part, weakens their economic viability. In Finland, horse manure was allowed to be used in energy production in November 2018. Demonstration tests on horse manure were carried out at the Juva district heating plant of Suur-Savon Sähkö Oy. The research examined the suitability of cutter bedding material horse manure for co-incineration. During the tests, the quality of the flue gases, the flue gas flow and particulate concentrations, were studied during two separate monitoring periods. Demonstration tests showed that horse manure can be used as a raw material source for co-incineration. The quality of flue gases from the horse manure and peat mixture incineration did not differ significantly from peat incineration. Horse manure seems to be well-suited as a source of bioenergy and fuel for co-incineration.
