Abstract:

The mixing of biogas production processes is one of the key elements when evaluating the process cost and energy efficiency. Unsuitable or insufficient mixing of the process can decrease the biogas production significantly due to, for example, sediment formation or flock breakdown. That is why it is important to determine the mixing method that is suitable for the reactor, feeding materials and digestate. The goal of this research is to compare the mixing efficiency by the mechanical mixing and the mechanical mixing – gas mixing combination. During the research, the comprehensive optimisation and monitoring of biogas plants and their end products will be studied. The research will determine whether gas mixing with mechanical mixing is a suitable and a sufficient method to mix digested sludge and does it have enough force to move the sediment without breaking the flocks. The effect on biogas and methane production will be studied. The research will produce new information of the techniques applicable to the biogas plant’s process mixing, which companies can utilise extensively in their business operations. The results can be widely mobilised and duplicated for present and future biorefineries and for the equipment suppliers. This research is part of the GASOPTI project.
