Abstract:
The cultivation of Switchgrass has been studied in depth in an ongoing 20-year experiment in Central Greece in the framework of project MAGIC [4]4 and earlier EU projects, in order to examine its agronomic and economic performance in Mediterranean climates. It was found that with the existing schemes of agricultural machinery subsidisation, the cultivation and marketing of switchgrass in marginal land can barely pay farmer expenses. The effect of different Nitrogen fertilisation quantities in the experimentation fields was relatively small, as the additional income generated was more or less cancelled out by the increased expense for fertiliser.
