Abstract:

The aim of this work was to develop biocomposites based on chitosan incorporated with rosemary or ginger essential oils (EOs) extracted from the residues of those plants and to evaluate its bioactivity. Thin films were produced by casting chitosan film incorporated with ginger essential oil (GEO) or rosemary essential oil (REO) at the proportions of 0% and 1% (v/v). The release process of the active compounds present in the film was monitored by a diffusion assay in four different simulants (ethanol 95%, 50%, 10% and water). Over time, total phenolic compounds and their antioxidant activity were measured at the simulant and the diffusion coefficient calculated. Film antimicrobial activity against several foodborne bacteria was also tested. Total phenolic compounds diffused to the simulant media was correlated to the amount of oil incorporated in the films, and to the hydrophobicity of the simulant (ethanol 95% > ethanol 50% > ethanol 10% > water). The diffusion coefficient of GEO was higher than REO’s and films incorporated with REO were more efficient than with GEO in terms of antimicrobial activity. In conclusion, the films tested presented antimicrobial and antioxidant activities, and can be highlighted as potential novel strategies to improve the bioactivity of biomaterials.
